Gymnastics Core & Strength Practice Plan for 9 and 10 Year Olds

At 9 and 10, the shapes turn HONEST: the hollow proper (low back pressed, the banana precise), arch holds with their form, push-up SHAPES (the gym's straight-body standard), TUCK-UPS (the V-up's friendly ancestor), and hang progressions (knee raises joining the dead hang). Quality gates arrive with celebration intact.

This session runs about 45 minutes on carpet plus bars where available. The gym's conditioning language gets adopted (holds counted in seconds, reps in sets), trembling stays honored, and the home-gym division stays clean: coaches assign and progress skills-conditioning; home banks the master shapes' quality volume.

Practice Plan

Carpet Session: Honest Shapes

The banana becomes a hollow, the flight becomes an arch hold, and push-ups meet the straight-body law. Quality arrives; celebration stays.

Warmup · 5 minutes

Shape Ramp

Duration5 minEquipmentcarpet

Animal laps, three boats, two flights, tall reaches. The shapes wake for inspection.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "Wake the shapes. Inspection is kind today."

Block 1: The Master Shapes, Properly · 15 minutes

Hollow Holds

Duration8 minEquipmentcarpet

The honest version: low back PRESSED down, arms by ears or at sides by strength, legs long and hovering, fifteen-second holds, four of them, then six gentle hollow rocks. The pressed back is the entire truth: arched fakes bank nothing.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "Back glued down, banana precise. The press is the shape."

Arch Holds and Rockers

Duration7 minEquipmentcarpet

The superman matured: arch holds (thighs and chest hovering, fifteen seconds, four), arch rocks (five, twice), the hollow-arch roll linking both. The spine's two masters, both honest now.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "Fly precise, rock smooth, roll between."

Block 2: Support Strength · 15 minutes

Push-Up Shapes

Duration8 minEquipmentcarpet

The gym's standard: push-ups as MOVING PLANKS (body one line, elbows back-ish, chest to fist height), sets of whatever stays beautiful (knees-assisted proudly legal), three sets. The straight-body law transfers from shapes to strength.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "A hollow that travels. Beauty sets the count."

Plank Families

Duration7 minEquipmentcarpet

Front planks (twenty seconds, twice), side planks (fifteen per side), the plank-to-down-dog flow (five slow). Support strength in its family homes.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "Lines that hold. The family stays straight."

Block 3: Hangs and Tucks · 8 minutes

Bar Progressions

Duration8 minEquipmentbars or sturdy substitute

Dead hangs (seconds counted, logged), knee raises (five slow, twice: knees to hips or chest by strength), one swing set if bars allow. Then floor tuck-ups (lying, knees pulling to chest with the hollow's press, eight, twice). Pulling and compression, banked.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "Hang long, lift knees, tuck precise. The bars are watching kindly."

Finish · 2 minutes

The Ledger

Duration2 minEquipmentthe log

Logged: hold seconds, beautiful push-up counts, hang times. One favorite shape closes.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "Book the shapes. They compound."

What to watch today: the hollow's press surviving effort. As holds lengthen, low backs sneak upward (the arch invading the hollow), and the pressed-down law is everything: shorter honest holds always beat longer lies. The gym's coaches will thank the press for years; grade it kindly and forever.

Common questions

What makes a hollow hold honest?

The low back pressed into the floor throughout: the shape's entire value lives in that press, and arch-sneaking fakes are the universal error. Fifteen pressed seconds beat a minute of banana theater, and the press-first habit at 9 underwrites every skill the gym will ever build.

How do home push-ups serve gymnastics specifically?

As traveling hollows: the sport's push-up standard is a moving straight-body plank, and the shape outranks the count at every level. Knees-assisted versions guard the line proudly while strength grows; the gym inherits bodies that already refuse to worm.

What bar work belongs at home versus the gym?

Home owns the foundations: dead hangs, knee raises, happy swings on playground bars. The gym owns everything skill-shaped: pullovers, casts, kips, and their progressions, with coaches and mats. The division keeps home bars purely a strength bank, which is exactly what they are best at.
