The read

Sofia is a 10-year-old Level 5 all-around gymnast for Summit Gymnastics who has the thing you can't teach — she's powerful and fearless, and she throws big skills without hesitation. The gap this season has been the scoreboard, because in gymnastics landing a skill and scoring it are two different things. Execution deductions eat her scores — bent knees, flexed feet, separated legs, a low chest on landings — so she does hard skills and still scores below girls doing easier ones cleanly; she hits her beam routine in practice and then falls or balks at meets; and she's got a mental block on one skill that she can do but hesitates on. The season's work went straight at those three, and her scores are starting to catch up to her difficulty.

Strengths
  • Genuinely powerful and fearless — she throws big skills, and that fearlessness is the hardest thing to coach.
  • Strong tumbler with real amplitude — the power to go big is there.
  • Coachable and hard-working; she'll grind the boring conditioning and shaping.
  • Starting to clean up her form, which is turning the same skills into higher scores.
Goals

Sofia is working to make her scores match her difficulty. Specifically: cleaning up her execution — pointed toes, straight legs, a tight body, chest up on landings — because form deductions are quietly costing her more than difficulty is earning her; competing beam the way she trains it, so meet nerves stop turning practice hits into falls; and working through the mental block on her one skill so she can compete it with confidence. The power and the fearlessness are already there; this season is about the form and the mindset that turn hard skills into high scores.
