Malik’s pre-competition routine

A real one, built for one track kid from everything the parent had shared. Nothing here is demo copy.

Pre-Game Routine

Malik's Pre-Race Routine

The same sequence every race — built so a fast kid gets to the line warm, loose, and relaxed instead of tight and pressing, because tension is the enemy of speed.

The night before

Spikes, uniform, water packed. A real dinner, in bed early. One sentence about tomorrow, then let it go.

The morning of / day of

A real meal that sits right, hydration starting early. Keep him calm — a sprinter's whole game is relaxation, and it starts hours before the gun.

Warm-up (before the race)

  • A jog and a full dynamic warmup — never sprint cold, it pulls hamstrings.
  • A couple of build-ups to feel top speed and relaxation.
  • A practice start or two — low and driving.

Timed so he's warm and loose right before his heat, not an hour early.

One focus, not five

Pick one thing to carry to the line — this season it's usually drive out low or run relaxed. One cue is a reminder; five is a lecture that tightens him up, which is the opposite of what a sprinter wants.

At the line

A breath, shoulders dropped, hands loose. The whole point is to arrive at the gun relaxed, not amped — the fastest version of him is the loose one.

The reset

After a bad race, the cue is short: "Next one, loose." His speed handles the racing — the routine's job is to keep a bad race from making him press in the next one.

Why the sameness matters: Malik presses when a race feels big, and pressing is exactly what slows him down. A routine he's run a hundred times gets him to the line relaxed, so a championship final feels like an ordinary time trial. That's the edge.
