Backyard Session: The Triangle and the Dance
Feet make infielders. The triangle out front, the right-left rhythm through the ball, and a glove that grows a forehand and a backhand.
Duration6 minEquipmenttennis balls, glove
Six stationary triangle checks: wide base, glove out front at the triangle's point (not under the body), bare hand riding shotgun, head down. You roll gentle balls into the set triangle. Then six creep-step reps timed to your "pitch!" call: the little hop into ready, weight landing on the toes as the imaginary ball crosses the plate.
Coaching Cue
Cue: "Field the ball out FRONT where your eyes can see it. Under you is blind country."
Block 1: Rhythm Through the Ball · 14 minutes
Duration7 minEquipmenttennis balls
The infielder's dance step, learned slow: approach the roller and time the last two steps (right, then left for a right-handed thrower) so the ball is fielded just after the left foot lands, momentum already drifting toward the throwing target. Ten reps at walking-then-jogging approach speed, the step called out loud ("right... left... FIELD"). Rhythm turns grounders from events into strides.
Coaching Cue
Cue: "Right, left, field. The grounder joins your steps; you don't stop for it."
Duration7 minEquipmenttennis balls, target at 30-40 feet
Same rhythm, completed: field on the dance step, then the feet CONTINUE (a shuffle gaining ground at the target) into the throw. Ten full plays. Grade the flow: any full stop between field and throw repeats the rep. This connectedness is the whole difference between kids who field-then-throw and infielders who make plays.
Coaching Cue
Cue: "The play never stops moving. Field it mid-stride, throw it mid-stride."
Block 2: The Glove Grows Sides · 14 minutes
Duration7 minEquipmenttennis balls
Rollers a step or two to the glove side: the kid moves the feet FIRST (shuffle or crossover by distance), fields on the forehand out front with the glove's fingers to the ground, and works the feet back under for the throw. Eight reps at growing width. The forehand is footwork wearing a glove; reaches without steps are the fault being trained out.
Coaching Cue
Cue: "Feet first, then glove. Reach with your legs."
Duration7 minEquipmenttennis balls
The skill kids think is advanced and isn't: rollers a step to the arm side, taken with the glove turned over (fingers down, elbow soft), the ball fielded off the OUTSIDE foot with the body low. Eight gentle reps, speed rising only with success. Then two "pick" reps each: a firm short-hop backhand stabbed cleanly, celebrated loudly, because backhand picks are the coolest feeling in infield play and joy accelerates learning.
Coaching Cue
Cue: "Turn the glove over, stay low, take it off your back foot. Backhands love brave elbows."
Block 3: Game Speed Plays · 11 minutes
Duration6 minEquipmenttennis balls, target
A continuous cycle at honest pace: straight-on roller, forehand, backhand, slow-roller charge, each fielded with its right footwork and finished with the on-the-move throw. Two full cycles with rest between. The mixing is the point; real innings never send the same ball twice, and the feet must choose the right answer without a warning label.
Coaching Cue
Cue: "Every hop asks a different question. Your feet already know the answers."
Duration5 minEquipmenttennis balls, targets
A three-out inning, narrated: you call the situation before each ball ("runner on first!"), roll it anywhere, and the kid makes the play to the RIGHT base (called aloud as they field). Errors just extend the inning, like real baseball. End on the third out with the jog-off ritual. Playing situations, not just balls, is what this age can absorb, and it makes them coaches' favorites.
Coaching Cue
Cue: "Know where it's going before it's hit. That's the infielder's secret."
What to watch today: stopping to field. The flat-footed catch with a separate throw afterward is the habit being replaced by the dance step, and it will fight back whenever the ball gets tricky. Slow the approach speed rather than surrendering the rhythm; a slower connected play beats a faster frozen one, today and at every level after.
