Layla’s letter

A real one, built for one dance kid from everything the parent had shared. Nothing here is demo copy.

Letter to Layla

Hey Layla —

Here's the picture of what you're building this season.

Your technique is genuinely clean — good lines, pointed feet, real training that took years to build. You already have the hard part. So let's be clear about what this season is actually about: it's not cleaner technique. It's about becoming a performer — dancing full-out, steadier turns, and bringing your class self to the stage.

What you're doing well

  • Your technique is clean. The lines, the feet, the training — that's the foundation, and it's the part that takes the longest. You have it.
  • You work hard and you'll grind the flexibility and the core, which is why your turns are steadying up.
  • You're detail-oriented — you want to get it right, and that care shows in your dancing.
  • You're starting to perform bigger, and you can feel the difference — dancing to the back row instead of to the mirror.

One thing to focus on this week

Perform full-out — project, use your face, commit. Here's the secret about competition dance: the judges aren't just scoring whether your technique is clean, they're scoring whether you perform. Two dancers with the exact same steps are separated by who dances bigger, sells the emotion, and projects to the back row. Right now you dance a little small and safe, like you're still in class — and that leaves points on the table. So dance like the back row has to feel it: chin up, eyes up, energy through your fingers and toes, commit to the story. Clean and small loses to committed and full-out. Give them the performance.

Keep going

The flexibility, the turn drills, the full-out run-throughs, the visualization — none of it is glamorous, and dancing full-out when you're tired or self-conscious is hard. It doesn't feel like it's adding up. It is. The dancer who moves the judges next season is the one who learned to perform this year. You already have the clean technique. This season is about the performance that turns it into scores. Keep going.
