How Ella's Doing

Ella's Season in the Midfield

The kind of player she is

Ella is a skilled stick-handler — a 13-year-old with a clean open-stick dribble and a good forehand, the kind of stick work that stands out at her age. Playing midfield for Riverside FHC, she's competitive with a real engine, and those clean skills are the foundation everything else is being built on. The talent with the stick is real; it was never the question.

The work underneath the stick

Here's the honest thing about this season: Ella's stick skills were better than her games, because she was one-sided and predictable, and good defenders had solved her. Three things were the reason, and they fed each other. She couldn't play the reverse stick, so defenders simply forced her to her left, where she couldn't receive, couldn't hit, couldn't do anything — taking away half the field before she even got the ball. She trapped the ball dead at her feet instead of receiving on the move, so every reception cost her three beats — stop, control, look, then move — when a beat in the midfield is the difference between a pass on and a pass lost. And she read transition late, reacting to the switch of play instead of anticipating it, so she was always catching up. So the work went where the game was taking her away. Reverse-stick receiving and hitting, ugly at first, until her weak side became a place she could actually play from. Receiving on the move — leading to the ball and taking her first touch into space, already turned and going. And scanning to read the field before the ball arrives, especially the switch from one side to the other.

Where she's headed

It came together over the season: defenders can't force her one way anymore, she's a step quicker to everything, and — the quiet win — she's reading the switch and getting there first. Her goals from here are specific: make the reverse stick fully automatic under game pressure, receive on the move every time, and read transition early enough to dictate it. The stick skills were never in doubt. This season was about the pieces that turn a nice one-sided player into a two-sided, quick-thinking midfielder — one a defense has to account for everywhere on the field.
