Martial Arts Forms Practice Practice Plan for 9 and 10 Year Olds

At 9 and 10, forms practice gains its POLISH layers: segment work deepening (the taught chapters at slow-motion exactness), STANCE depth inside the form (the stances' file visiting: forms are stances traveling), the form's RHYTHM honored (pauses and bursts as the instructor teaches them), and performance RUNS (the known form, once, with ceremony: testing's rehearsal).

This session runs about 45 minutes. The slow-motion run becomes the polish tool (every checkpoint visible at quarter speed), the mirror's minutes arrive for forms, and the eternal law holds: the instructor's version, exactly, with questions saved for class.

Practice Plan

Home Session: The Polish Layers

Slow-motion makes every checkpoint visible, stances keep their depth mid-form, and the performance run rehearses testing's moment. Polish is patience.

Warmup · 5 minutes

Bow and Form Ramp

Duration5 minEquipmentcarpet

Bow, basics ramp, the form's first chapter easy. The polish bench opens.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "Bow, ramp, chapter one. Polish today."

Block 1: Slow-Motion Polish · 15 minutes

Quarter-Speed Chapters

Duration15 minEquipmentcarpet

The tool: the current chapters at QUARTER speed (every stance settling to depth, every technique's path exact, breathing calm), one chapter per round, three rounds with rests. Slow-motion hides nothing: the checkpoints polish where speed would smear them.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "Quarter speed, full depth. Slow shows everything; polish it there."

Block 2: Stances Traveling · 12 minutes

Depth Through the Form

Duration12 minEquipmentcarpet

The stance file visits: the known form run at natural pace with ONE grade: stance depth surviving the travel (the horse's sit, the front stance's length, mid-form as at statue practice), two runs, depth's lapses noted kindly. Forms are stances traveling; the travel keeps the depth.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "The statues travel without shrinking. Depth rides the whole story."

Block 3: Performance Rehearsal · 8 minutes

The Once-Run

Duration8 minEquipmentcarpet, phone optional

Testing's shape: the known form ONCE, full ceremony (bow, the run at its taught rhythm, the ending held, bow), filmed where helpful, performance graded on composure beside exactness. The once-ness matters: tests are single attempts, and the rehearsal honors it.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "One run, full ceremony. Tests are once; practice once too."

Finish · 5 minutes

Review and Bow

Duration5 minEquipmentthe log

The run reviewed together (one praise, one polish-note for next session), the book taking chapters' status, the closing bow. Polish compounds by notes.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "One praise, one note, bow. Polish is patient."

What to watch today: rhythm flattening at slow speeds. Quarter-speed work tempts monotone (every move equal), and forms breathe (the taught pauses and bursts are the story's punctuation): the instructor's rhythm gets honored even slow. Polished checkpoints inside the taught rhythm: that pairing is the whole layer.

Common questions

Why is slow-motion the forms polish tool?

Visibility: quarter speed exposes every checkpoint (stance depth, technique paths, balance) that natural pace smears past, and polish applied there survives speeding up. It is forms's equivalent of the slow kick: the art's densest practice, and testing judges see its fingerprints immediately.

What does "stances traveling" fix?

The universal forms leak: statue-practice depth abandoned mid-form (stances shrinking as the sequence travels). The one-grade runs (depth surviving travel) reconnect the files: forms are the stance bank spending, and the travel-depth habit is what testing's judges grade first.

How should the performance run be treated?

As testing's rehearsal: once, full ceremony, composure graded beside exactness: the single-attempt shape honored weekly until tests feel like Tuesdays. Film helps kindly (one praise, one note), and the once-law builds the performer forms exist to train.
