Martial Arts Forms Practice Practice Plan for 11 and 12 Year Olds

At 11 and 12, forms practice reaches FLUENCY's work: full-form runs (the belt's form owned end-to-end: memory's question retired), POWER's taught placement (the snap and kiai where the instructor puts them: the form's dynamics arriving), FILM review's partnership (runs verified against the taught version), and testing COMPOSURE (once-runs under small pressures).

This session runs about an hour. The dynamics stay strictly taught (power's placement is style-and-instructor territory: home amplifies, never invents), previous belts' forms get their maintenance rounds (the art accumulates), and the eternal law needs no restating: it is the practice's constitution by now.

Practice Plan

Home Session: Fluency and Dynamics

The form owned end-to-end, power placed exactly where taught, and film verifying the scripture. Previous forms stay maintained; the art accumulates.

Warmup · 10 minutes

Bow and Full Ramp

Duration10 minEquipmentcarpet

Bow, basics, stance depth visits, the form's first half easy. Fluency's bench opens.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "Bow, ramp, half a story. Fluency today."

Block 1: Full-Form Fluency · 20 minutes

End-to-End Runs

Duration12 minEquipmentcarpet

The owned form: full runs at natural taught pace (memory fluent, transitions smooth, stances deep), three runs with rests, each graded on ONE layer (run one: stances; two: paths; three: rhythm). Layered grading polishes without overwhelming.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "Whole story, one layer per telling. Fluency polishes in layers."

Maintenance Rounds

Duration8 minEquipmentcarpet

The accumulating art: previous belts' forms, one run each (exactness maintained: tests revisit them, and the art is cumulative), stumbles re-walked without drama. The library stays dusted.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "Old stories stay told. The art accumulates or evaporates."

Block 2: Taught Dynamics · 20 minutes

Power's Placement

Duration20 minEquipmentcarpet

The dynamics as taught: the form's power moments (the snap's placement, the kiai's spots, the pauses' lengths: exactly per instruction) drilled in segments (the power-chapter isolated, five reps), then full runs with dynamics living (two runs). The form breathes as the style breathes it; home amplifies the taught breathing.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "Power where placed, breath where taught. The style's dynamics, amplified."

Block 3: Film and Composure · 10 minutes

Verified Once-Runs

Duration10 minEquipmentphone

The partnership: one full ceremonial run FILMED, reviewed against the taught version (one praise, one note: the kind law), the note applied on a segment, then the composure close: one more once-run with small pressure invited (the family watching: testing's audience rehearsed). The scripture, verified and performed.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "Film the scripture, perform for the pews. Once-runs build testers."

Finish · 0 minutes

Review, Bow, Book

Durationinside closeEquipmentthe log

The praise-and-note logged, forms' statuses updated, the closing bow. Fluency files its layers.

Coaching Cue

Cue: "Note, bow, book. The layers compound."

What to watch today: dynamics invented past the teaching. Power's placement tempts creativity (extra snaps, dramatic additions), and the style's dynamics are curriculum: the taught placement amplified exactly, questions saved for class. Judges grade the style's breathing, not the practitioner's inventions: the constitution's wisdom, again.

Common questions

How many forms should stay in maintenance?

All previously earned: tests revisit them, the art is cumulative, and one maintenance run each weekly keeps the library dusted at minutes' cost. The accumulating repertoire is the style's design: belts build on belts, and evaporated old forms bill at exactly the wrong moments.

What are forms dynamics and who owns them?

The power's placement: snaps, kiais, pauses, tempo changes: the form's breathing, and it is entirely style-and-instructor territory. Home's job is amplifying the taught placement exactly: dynamics drilled as chapters, lived in runs, never invented. The style breathes its way; the practitioner learns the breath.

How does film review work best for forms?

Against the scripture with the kind law: the run compared to the taught version (class notes, the instructor's demonstrations as memory serves), ONE praise and ONE note per review, the note applied immediately on a segment. Film accelerates exactness; the kindness keeps it loved.
